When all is said and done, what business boils down to is numbers. And when it comes to numbers there is usually no better guide to them in a company than its chief financial officer. That explains why CFOs are often seen as dour bean counters but, in fact, this caricature is now well and truly past its sell-by date.

How the world’s appetite for natural resources is putting new cities on the globetrotter's map

With nothing but the empty expanse of the central Asian steppe surrounding it, the designer skyline of Astana, Kazakhstan’s spanking new capital, presents an incongruously jaw-dropping sight. Its hulking thoroughfares may have to wait a while to witness traffic jams and many of its towers of glass and steel still await occupants, but Astana is already a fixture on the itinerary of globe-trotting movers and shakers.

The Olympics is one hell of a party for Britain, never mind the hangover

The Olympics are only in part about sports; they are quite often as much about politics and economics. That was the case with Beijing 2008 (a resurgent China’s celebration of its arrival on the world stage)  and Moscow 1980 (the still virile Soviet Union’s communist riposte to the capitalist West). And so it is with London 2012.
